2012 Kia Sedona EVO-ALL will not activate factory security

+1 vote
EVO-ALL with v. 4.18.  On a 2102 Kia Sedona.  The module seems to program normally.. .  I am in W2W mode. It is tied in to the CAN system and the unlock/lock wires from the remote start module.  I am not tied in to the vehicles lock/unlock wires.

The lights flash during programming to indicate the door locks and the brake/tach have gone correctly as well as the key bypass as the remote start seems to operate properly, except it leaves the headlights on after the programmed runtime expires....I don't know yet if the remote start or the bypass module is to blame for that one

Anyways my main problem:

If I use the factory fob the doors will lock, activate the security, and flash the indicators.

However when I lock the doors with the remote start fob (It is a code-alarm unit) it does lock the doors but fails to activate the factory security....5 minutes later the doors unlock by themselves.  I do not see any reason for this or a setting in the remote start manual that pertains to this (function)

Hi Ben,

The EVO is the one doing the Lock Unlock Arm Disarms. We'll have to do some tests though to get this problem resolved.

  1. with W2W make sure the Blue and White wires from the datalink connector are cut.
  2. On the purple and purple/white of the EVO, their should only be the Lock and Unlock of the remote starter connected there. Is this how its done?
  3. With the window open, lock the doors by sending a ground pulse to the purple wire of the EVO. Don't lock with the remote starter. Wait a minute or 5 to see if the factory alarm does get armed. The best way would be to manually unlock the door from the inside and then opening it.

1, Yes I did cut the tx/rx wires

2. Yes, the lock/unlock wires of the remote start module are connected to these

3.  The factory security does not arm this way either, more testing also reveals that even when I arm the vehicle with the factory fob it still unlocks the doors a few minutes later.  He had to go out of town so I unplugged the white connector (all the wires connected to the CAN-BUS) so that he could at least lock his doors until he comes back.  I've been talking with a few installers in town and they all believe the module either has the incorredct firmware or is faulty in some way.  I managed to find a shop here that has the required cables for programming and is willing to reflash it for me.  I will go from there once I get the vehicle back in the shop
Excellent!

When you get the module updated with a different firmware, do a master reset on it in the vehicle before re-programming it to the vehicle.

Here is the master reset procedure.

1- Hold down programming button while plugging in datalink connector.
2- Let go of button when LED is RED.
3- Push and hold button again until all three LEDs start to alternate.
4- Disconnect unit, she is now reset.
I dropped the module off today to get reflashed...now just doing some troubleshooting until I get it back...making sure I didn't miss anything.

If I am not in data-link mode, are all the input/output wires on the 20-pin connector required?  I am referring to everything in light gray on the install guide (p. 36, connection 29)

Currently I don't have the door status, trunk status, sliding door, foot brake or hand brake connected between the EVO and the remote start unit

They do not all have to be connected.

Ones you might want would be:

  • Foot Brake
  • Tachometer
  • Trunk Release
  • Lock/Arm -- Only connect the remote starters Lock wire to this, not the remote starters Arm wire.
  • Unlock/Disarm -- Only connect the remote starters Unlock wire to this, not the remote starters Disarrm wire.

You do not need door status and trunk status unless your remote starter is also an alarm. Handbrake is only used with manual vehicles (door status also).

Regarding the original problem, the doors may also be unlocking after locking them because something is powering the vehicles key sense wire. Make sure you have no connections done to this wire. Also, redo the ground connection.

Thank you, a reflash of the EVO fixed the original issue.  Now it activates the factory security and stays locked.  But now it unlocks the doors just before start and does not relock them.  I had to remedy this by attaching the "pulse after start" wire to the lock circuit.  just when I thought I had all the unlock gremlins figured out they go and strike again:

Originally I had the issue with the headlights remaining on after remote shutdown or timeout.  Some research suggested I need to pulse the drivers door pin so the vehicle would shutdown the lights.  It made sense so I used the "pulse after shutdown" output from the remote start to trigger the door pin and it worked....but created a new problem.  It unlocks the doors (the vehicle does, not the starter).

So I cut the wire triggering the door and tested further.  Turns out  if I manually trigger the door a second after remote shutdown, the headlights will turn off and the doors will remain locked......exactly what needs to happen.  However if I trigger the door at shutdown (simultaneously)...the vehicle unlocks the doors.  Now if I could only delay the "pulse after shutdown" output so that it actually happened "after" shutdown I believe my last problem would be solved.  I don't see a setting to delay the after shutdown pulse so regrettable I am at a loss again, how can I work around this one?  All I want it to give the customer a vehicle that stays locked...every time I spend hours on it and it just fights for the right to unlock.  What do you think of that one?

I had to remedy this by attaching the "pulse after start" wire to the lock circuit.

If you go in the EVO-ALL Options menu while it's plugged into the FLash-Link, you can actually turn on an Option to relock after start. Since you already conencted a "pulse after start" wire, leave it as is. But now you know for the next ones.

It made sense so I used the "pulse after shutdown" output from the remote start to trigger the door pin and it worked....but created a new problem.

The autolights can be turned off by interupting the autolights wire, which is Green and can be found at the switch. Basically, you need to open the circuit after shutdown with a relay. You should be able to use that pulse after shutdown wire from the remote starter to trigger the relay.

I have a feeling that it's right to unlock will be revoked very very soon.

Awesome thank you very much, I will open up that wire with a relay.

If I had access to the software/cables and could flash myself I could have fixed this issue weeks ago...makes it very difficult for the small time installer to get anything done nowadays..always having to rely on some other shop for critical supplies like bypass modules
Why not check with a distributor for parts? The software itself is a free download on our website but the Flash-Link Updator itself is not.

I'd personallly recommend atleast getting yourself a Flash-Link Updator. With all the features that the EVO can currently do, you need this tool. And you would save on gas.

Here is the current distributor list.

Thank you I just sent an email off to the closest distributor.  I did download the software...does that allow me access to the firmware and programming as long as I have a flash-link updator?  I don't need a special dealer password or a paid subscription?

Sorry this discussion got way off topic now

You do not need to pay for anything else once you bought the Flash-Link nor do you need any type of special account with anyone.  It might take a few minutes or installs to get used to the software but once you get the hang of it you will see how simple it is.

Sorry this discussion got way off topic now

This will save you and others who might read this, future head aches. The Flash-Link is honestly an important tool to have. Even if its for a one time use. It's also a requirement for many newer vehicles in which the EVO would not work out of the box because of firmware updates and/or Options that might need to be turned on.

Thank You for the help
