2013 wrx Ready mode is not working, some wiring questions also

+1 vote

I recently finished installing an EVO ONE on my 2013 subaru wrx.  I also installed the compustar PRO t11 remote kit.

Quick notes about my install:

  •  I used both the wrx and sti instructions since the wrx lacked some info.
  • Hood pin is not installed and the wire is not connected to anything (i was planning on doing a hood tilt switch, i wanted to refrain from running the wires till I can confrim my remote starter works 100%)
  • Clutch bypass is not done, I was waiting for the diode to come in the mail.  I have been pressing the clutch pedal down to simulate the bypass.
  • starter 2 is hooked up through a relay as per the install instructions for the STI.
  • Turbo timer does not work, car just turns off.
  • Instructions do not call out for hand brake line to be tapped into, so this is not done.
  • Immobilizer bypass is done from a tb-box (inserted oem chip and wired up with the antenna around the ignition barrel)  Fortin employee verified I was able to do this.
  • All connections have been double checked and used t-taps for the smaller lines and hard wired for ignition harness.

I have a few questions/issues.

I cannot seem to get ready mode to work.  Per the instrctions, I am pulling up on the hand brake, releasing my foot off the brake, pressing the remote start button on the compustar, and then turning off the ignition.  When pressing the button on the remote, my parking lights flash 3 times and when turning key to off, the car turns off as well.   -Question:  Niether the wrx nor the sti install insturctions calls out for a hand brake/ebrake to be tapped into. Could this be  the reason why I my ready mode is not activating?

My remote from the compustar kit is working but does not lock/unlock/trunk release.  It only flashes my parking lights.  I cannot seem to figure out why this is the case.  When installing the remote, I had to program via method 2 from the install instructions (click valet about 3x).

When attempting to remote start I get 3x flashing which means Ready mode is not activated.  I have also switched back and froth between regular and valet mode as to double check.

Hi Ahmad, saw your email last night.

Sounds like the can-bus never actually programmed. So the module is not seeing , tach, hand brake and whatever else it needs to enable the ready mode.

You will need to test the Can wires. Super easy to do.

  • Disconnect the 5-pin white connector from the EVO-ONE.
  • Turn ignition On
  • With a multimeter set to DC voltage, test all can-bus wires directly at the 5-pin white connector of the evo-all. Tell us how much voltage is on each of the 4 wires.

Immobilizer bypass is done from a tb-box (inserted oem chip and wired up with the antenna around the ignition barrel)  Fortin employee verified I was able to do this.

You might need to also disable A3.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for getting back to me, I will get you those readings tonight when I get home from work.

Question though.  On the WRX install insturctions on stated to use 2 wires from  the white connector (Can bus high 1 and Can bus low 1).    However, on the STI instructions it states to use all 4 (high 1, 2 and low 1, 2).

I followed the WRX and only wired up 2.  Based off your response, should I go back and wire up the second 2 high and lows?
Hi Robert,

I went ahead and installed the other 2 Can wires according to the sti insturctions.

Still no luck.

I installed the line for the EBRAKE just to see if that will work, no luck.

When connecting a multimeter i got the following readings

(DCV set to 20)

CAN 1 LOW: 4.16

CAN 1 HIGH: 0.84

CAN 2 LOW: 2.31

CAN 2 HIGH: 2.62

Here are my thoughts...

Can1 are not correct. Should be similar voltage as can2. At the moment, can1 is running on single wire can and not dual.

Connect only the can-bus wires indicated in the guide for your car. https://fortin.ca/download/28721/evo-one_subaru_d20150115.pdf

*** Foot brake detection needs to be connected. It is not on the can-bus and is a required connection for this vehicle. ***

Reset the evo: https://fortin.ca/en/qa/50193/faq-how-do-i-reset-my-evo-all?show=50193#q50193

Reprogram the EVO to the car.

Check that option 20.6 is enabled in the remote starter options. Not option 20.1.

You can also do the following to test the remote starter works fine in automatic mode. Please do the following. Make sure vehicle is in neutral when doing this....

  1. Make sure only 1 set of can bus is connected as per guide linked above.
  2. Master reset the evo: https://fortin.ca/en/qa/50193/faq-how-do-i-reset-my-evo-all?show=50193#q50193
  3. Reprogram the evo to car.
  4. Cut yellow loop on back of unit.
  5. MAKE SURE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL
  6. Press on clutch
  7. Put the key in the barrel
  8. Remote start the car.

If the vehicle starts and stays running for over 1 minute. This confirms proper connections and that can-bus is working for tach signal. Also test that lock and unlock work, and also that you can shut down the car by pressing on the brake.

Hi Robert

Good news, IT WORKED!   I did a hard reset, checked/changed the settings you metnioned (they were already set to those settings after the reset) and reprogrammed the evo one to the car.  remote starter works.

I have 2 things left to troubleshoot then i promise ill be out of your hair.

lock and unlock and trunk still do not work on my compustar remote.  I tried to reprogram it following the first steps but no luck, had to program the remotes using the second set.    The remotes are from the new pro t11,  they came with a 6pin harness.  I ordered a 4 min harness from compustar and repinned according the the directions posted on fortin.  any thoughts on why it still does not work?  my lights do flash as if they would on my oem remote, but the doors physically do not lock.

tb-box that has my chip has to be touching my ignition barrel for it to work.  I checked the A3 settings and disabled it, still no luck.  I currently have A3 enabled.  the antenna is wrapped around the ignition barrel.  Any thoughts on this?

Also, i did the clutch bypass according to the sti instructions.  The car turns on without pressing the clutch now even without remote start.  is this the intention? or did i reverse my diode by mistake?

Thank you so much for supporting me so far!

I dont work for compu, but i am pretty sure you need the 6-pin harness for their PRO series. We have an adaptor for those cables called the RFA-COMPU.

Also, i did the clutch bypass according to the sti instructions.  The car turns on without pressing the clutch now even without remote start.  is this the intention? or did i reverse my diode by mistake?

You should not be able to start the car without touching the clutch. Remove clutch bypass connections. Sounds like you are connected on the wrong side of the relay.

If you want to test that the loop is properly positioned. Jump both black wires on the other side of the tb-box together. Note that the TB-BOX does not plug directly into the 2-pin connector on the EVO-ONE. You need to cut off the 2-pin connector and wire the 2 black wires to the White/Red and White/Blue of the red connector.

Just ran into a snag about that clutch bypass. The guide for the WRX-Sti is wrong for the clutch connection. it's missing a diode in the diagram. This is why you were able to start the car without pressing the clutch.
Thank you Robert for your updated install instructions for the clutch bypass.

I did have another question as far as the RF remote kits go.

Since the Compustar Pro T11 was not fully working (only remote start function was working, not the lock unlock functions) with the RF-Compu and 6 pin harness as you metnioned above, I purchased a Fortin RF kit.

I purchased a Fortin RF642w 2 way remote kit.  I followed the instructions online and installed it to the EVO ONE.  I am able to get the remote starter button to work, however, just like the compustar remote, the lock/unlock functions do not work.  When I press them, my car flights flash and I hear a click under the dash just as the OEM remote does, however the actual doors do not lock or unlock.

What am I missing here?  Is there the intention for the EVO One to carry 2 remotes or did I miss something in the settings when i set up the EVO ONE?  ( did look through the settings using the flash manager however nothing jumped out to me that I needed to change.

Please shed some light,

Thank you!
Is the blue led on the evo flashing when pressing lock or unlock and is this happening all the time or only when the car is running?

If you disconnect the RED connector of the EVO and press lock or unlock on the FACTORY remote, do the door lock or unlock?

I'll also need the 12 digit service number of the EVO-ONE.
Hi. Blue light flashes once when pressing lock or unlock with the new remote. When disconnecting the red connector I cannot use the factory remote to lock or unlock (nothing happens when I press the button) My service number is 002b03 033665
i know you were using two guides for the install and i am wondering if you did the security light connection that involved cutting a brown/red wire. If you did, make sure it;s the right wire or else door locks will not work while the engine is running.
I did not connect the secuirty light wire (A 17 and A18) when i did my install.  I followed mostly the old WRX install instructions (i see that there has been an update for the wrx realeased now)

Let me clarify the issue a little better.  When the car is parked and not running.  I cannot lock/unlock using the compustar or fortin RF remotes.  My oem remote still works and lets me lock/unlock the car.

While remote start is active and the car is running, I cannot lock or unlock my car using the compustar or fortin RF remote.  I CAN use my OEM remote to unlock/lock the car.

While the key is in the ignition and the car is running, the compustar/fortin/OEM remotes do not allow to lock/unlock (this is normal though and how the car functioned prior to installing the remote starter)

The only functions that work on the compustar and the Fortin RF remotes is the remote starter button.
Bump. Any more ideas?
Door locks should definitaly be functional while the engine is off. Either it's connections relating to that door lock data wire or the unit never fully programmed correctly.

While the ignition is on, door locks from the aftermarket remotes should also be functional but we are currently aware of an issue on Subaru where this is not the case.
